How this site knows what it says
Our sources
Every number on this site comes from a named source, and the source is shown beside it. The site rebuilds twice a day from the feeds below. Nothing is typed in by hand except the checks marked as such.
Live feeds, read at every build
| Source | What we use | How | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bureau of Meteorology (opens in a new tab) | Weather observations from the nearest station, tide predictions and tidal streams | Public data files | Every build (twice a day) |
| Open-Meteo (opens in a new tab) | Forecasts for temperature, wind and gusts, rain, UV; waves, swell and sea temperature; a second and third weather model to check the wind against | Public forecast API | Every build |
| EPA Victoria Beach Report (opens in a new tab) | Water quality at the monitored bay beaches | The published site list | Every build, while the EPA reports |
| Country Fire Authority (opens in a new tab) | Fire danger rating and total fire bans for the Central district | The published district feed, read twice by two methods; if they disagree, nothing is shown | Every build |
Checked by hand, then kept
| Source | What we use | How | How often |

| Life Saving Victoria (opens in a new tab) | Which beaches are patrolled, and when | The published patrol season, read by hand (LSV does not publish rosters as data) | Reviewed each season; the date of the last review is shown |
| OpenStreetMap (opens in a new tab) | Coastline shape, to measure which way each of the 17 beaches faces; the maps | Measured once and stored; map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) | When a beach is added |
| Google Maps (opens in a new tab) | Links to each venue's live listing (for opening hours) and directions | Only Google's place identifier is stored, as Google's terms allow. No Google content is copied or shown here, and no reviews or ratings | Looked up once per venue |
